City Outreach Service

Many people with drug related problems are unwilling or unable to access a city centre drugs service. The reasons for this are multi-faceted. They can include fear of identification as a drug user and for those who are stabilised / drug free, concerns may be around the possibility of meeting old acquaintances who may trigger a relapse. In addition, practical issues such as disability, childcare and work commitments can also be factors preventing use of a city centre base. In light of the importance of minimising any potential barriers to services, Drugs Action's city outreach services brings the following to people in their own communities:

  • Weekly drop-in advice, information and needle exchange sessions in Mastrick, Northfield, Woodside and Middlefield
  • Outreach counselling sessions are available by arrangement in a variety of locations throughout the city. This service is available to drug users, ex-users and family members affected by drug use
  • Torry Outreach Service - A dedicated worker for the Torry area operates 2 days per week. Based in the Community Leisure Centre in Oscar Road; the outreach drugs worker offers individual counselling, advice and training to drug users, families, community groups and professionals in the Torry area
  • Delivery of detached work, input to youth groups and support to young people in partnership with local workers such as Community Learning staff. This work focuses on targeting young people at risk from drug use
  • Tailor-made training / consultancy to local projects is provided which aims to ensure a consistent and appropriate approach to drug use is used across communities
